Australia: WorldStrides at University of Newcastle
Study abroad in Australia through WorldStrides at the University of Newcastle.
The University of Newcastle is one of Australia’s most naturally beautiful campuses, with many environmentally protected habitats. The University has nearly 17,000 students, 5,600 of which are international students. This program offers various courses, including sciences, business management, environmental studies, and art.
The campus and city of Newcastle are well connected via train and bus, surrounded by wineries, national parks, miles of beach, and only two hours north of Sydney. Newcastle has a relaxed coastal lifestyle, diverse nightlife, award-winning dining, a burgeoning arts culture, friendly people, and a serious coffee culture.
Why study abroad in Australia?
“Studying abroad has been the best academic and life decision I have made so far...I have grown as a person in maturity, increasing my awareness of myself and the people around me. Studying abroad in Australia is the best thing I can recommend to any student.” - Rollins Study Abroad Alum
Australian Studies Courses
Students must take at least one Australian Studies focused class: choose two to allow for flexibility. Examples include: Introduction to Aboriginal Studies, War and Australian Society, Aboriginal Education, etc.
Newcastle Courses
Choose your other three courses from the many other offerings. As you search, make sure the courses are available at the “Callaghan Campus" or "Newcastle City," and are held in Semester 1 for spring and Semester 2 for fall.
Australian Educational System
- Fewer class hours per week, less contact with professors and less continuous assessment. Most professors have a lecture-based teaching style.
- Grades are based on only a few major assignments, such as a midterm and final exam.
- First-year students are already focused in their major or specialization, so introductory courses cover higher level topics. 200-level or second year courses are the equivalent of an upper-level course at Rollins.
- Self-discipline and self-directed study are required for success. Students are expected to keep up with coursework and reading without prompting.
